Democratic National Committee: Reform the Superdelegate System

To be delivered to Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Chair, DNC, R.T. Rybak, Vice Chair, DNC, Maria Elena Durazo, Vice Chair, DNC, Donna Brazile, Vice Chair Voter Registration and Participation, DNC, Raymond Buckley, Vice Chair, ASDC President and 2 other targets (click here to see more)

Petition Statement

The current system, which allows superdelegates to vote for the candidate of their personal preference, is undemocratic.

We strongly urge the DNC to eliminate the existence of superdelegates, or require superdelegates in each state and territory to vote in direct proportion to the elected pledged delegates of the state they represent.
There are currently 2,593 signatures. NEW goal - We need 3,000 signatures!

Petition Background

At Maine's recent convention, Democrats voted to change Maine’s system and require superdelegates to vote according to the proportion of the people's vote. This happened in response to the fact that just one of the state's five superdelegates (20%) committed his vote to the 2016 presidential candidate who won 64% of the caucus vote and 68% of pledged delegates at the convention.

In numerous states, the current situation of superdelegates overwhelmingly supporting the candidate who lost that vote is unacceptable. It is undemocratic and disenfranchises voters.

If the Democratic Party wishes to live up to its name, it needs to fix the superdelegates system so that the will of the majority of voters is represented in every state and territory.
